Layout Workshop

During this workshop we learned about layout and how to identify the hierarchical elements. The first exercise was to make up a template of a newspaper size. We cut up some elements from other magazines and newspapers and then we mixed them up and we reconstructed our own page layout(A3). This was a group exercise. We tried to combine as many as possible hierarchical elements on this page. We worked on it 20 minutes. Later on, we did an introduction about Layout using InDesign.

Above are my own tries to identify the different hierarchical elements of the pages. The first is from a news website, the second from a magazine and the last one from a newspaper. This was a practical exercise in order to understand exactly what is what.

Typography workshop

During this workshop we learned about the different types of serifs and we did some exercises. The first exercise was to find examples of the different types of serifs and re-draw them on a sheet using pen or pencil. Later on, we had to identify and label the following typographical elements of each typeface: ascender, counter, x-height, serif, descender, body size, baseline and the capital height. Finally we learned how to Kerning, Tracking and Leading using InDesign. I found this workshop very interesting and I enjoyed it!
Above, there are some examples of my work:

Typography photographs - Blog task

Today, on the first half of the day we were asked to collect examples of different types of Typography around the E&C area. We had to work in a team of three or four persons and then organize the photos into categories. These photos are from the Railway station, the E&C shopping center and the high street of the area.

An interesting photograph from E&C

I took this photo for the workshop of the fist day. We had to design a mock blog and one of the things we had to do was to take an interesting photo from E&C and write the reasons we chose this image. The first interesting element that I see here is the hard contrast between the buildings and the sky. Secondly, there are two buildings, the one next to the other, totally different. The one is a modern architectural building and the other is the traditional resindential building council house. I really like the fact that the one is next to the other.

On the picture above, there is a digital collage I designed. The idea came from my sketch on the first post in my blog. It is the same idea but only with two letters (F, O)

LOGO

This is a logo of my nickname (FOCUS). I designed it on Adobe Illustrator and I used only black and white in order to make it as clear as possible. My first thought was to create this logo for the header of the blog but when I tried it I saw that it was not very clear the word 'focus'. I think it is a good idea to print it on a t-shirt. The result is here:

LCC FdA Graphic Communication FIRST DAY

Today was my first day at LCC. On the first half of the day we learned many things about the blogs and how we can start up a blog. On the afternoon we had to do a project working on groups of three. The main theme was to create and present a blog. The group project really helped me to start the course very well. I saw different types of works from many students and that was very interesting and helpful. I really enjoyed my first day!!

This is a quick sketch from today. I transformed the buildings to a font!
